The Ford Cortina GT 500 was released in July 1965 with a total of only 112 produced. A model that was unique to Australia, the Cortina GT 500 was the car that Ford wanted to take to victory at the Bathurst Mount Panorama circuit.
They achieved their desired result in the 1965 Armstrong 500, with Cortina GT 500s finishing 1-2 in Class D and 1-2 outright.
The Fairfield Motors 11D entrant driven by Barry Seton and Midge Bosworth took the top step of the podium alongside the 2nd place, Grawill Motors 4D entrant driven by Bruce McPhee and Barry Mulholland. The success of the GT 500 led to eligibility rule changes for next year’s 1966 Gallaher 500.
