The Southern States Army was formed in 1861. The largest contingent was made up of men from Virginia, most of whom were not professional soldiers but volunteers. Much equipment was not standardized and uniforms were often very heterogeneous. The Confederate army was led by Robert E. Lee, a general of great value both as a field commander and as a great strategist.
