The Mercedes coupé had a tubular chassis and a 2,996 cc longitudinal front engine. capable of making the car reach a maximum speed of 260 km/h. The transmission was 4-speed and rear-wheel drive. The real strength of the car, however, lay in its innovative design and in the adoption of the characteristic opening of the hinged doors above the roof which influenced its name. The Mercedes 300 SL coupé was in fact known throughout the world as Gullwing (Gullwing) for the aesthetic solution adopted.
