The Boeing EA-18 G Growler was created to satisfy a specific need of the US Navy: to have a specialized aircraft for electronic warfare intended to replace the now dated, both in terms of avionics and performance, Grumman EA-6B Prowler. The Growler is directly derived from the F/A-18 F Super Hornet two-seat carrier-based fighter, of which it substantially retains all of its aerodynamic characteristics. The two General Electric engines guarantee the Growler a maximum speed of Mach 1.8 and performance in line with the aircraft it must support. The crew consists of the pilot and, in tandem, the WSO (Weapon System Officer). Unlike the F/A-18, it is not equipped with a cannon but is capable of carrying pods for radar jamming and electronic warfare, additional tanks, chaff and flare dispensers as well as AIM-120 AMRAAM missiles in its underwing pylons.
