On 6 June 1944, the troops of General Dempsey’s British Expeditionary Force, composed of the 3rd and 50th British Divisions and the 3rd Canadian Division, landed on the beaches of Normandy code-named “sword”, “juno”. ” and “gold”. D-Day had thus arrived and included, for the British Expeditionary Force, the landing and rapid conquest of the city of Caen. The Americans, landing in Omaha and Utha, further west, had to ensure control of the Cotentin peninsula and the port of Cherbourg.
